Lightning Maroon Clownfish – Aquarium Reefers
The White Lightning Maroon clownfish is a striking variant of the Maroon clownfish (Premnas biaculeatus) known for its rich maroon body and an intricate, irregular white "lightning bolt" pattern that varies between individuals and intensifies with age. This semi-aggressive, territorial, and hardy species is characterized by its intense coloration, confident disposition, and large size for a clownfish, with females becoming much larger than males.
Physical Characteristics

  • Color:A deep red or maroon body with bold, unique white stripes that resemble lightning bolts.
  • Patterns:No two fish have the same pattern; the white markings are highly variable and become more visually striking as the fish matures.
  • Spines:The scientific name Premnas biaculeatus refers to the spines on the fish's cheeks, visible upon close inspection.
  • Size:Maroon clownfish are among the largest clownfish species, with females growing significantly larger than males, sometimes reaching up to 6 inches in size.
Temperament & Care

  • Temperament:Semi-aggressive, especially as adults, and can be territorial, making them best suited for larger tanks with careful consideration of tankmates.
  • Diet:Omnivorous, readily accepting a varied diet of frozen and dry foods like pellets, flakes, mysis shrimp, and brine shrimp.
  • Aquarium Suitability:Hardy and relatively easy to care for, but due to their assertive nature, they are not the most social fish and should be housed alone or in pairs with a dramatic size difference.
  • Host Anemone:While not essential for survival, they naturally associate with Bubble Tip anemones (Entacmaea quadricolor).
History & Origin

  • Discovery:The Lightning Maroon morph originated from the naturally occurring White Stripe Maroon variety, with a particularly unique female discovered in the wild in 2010.
  • Breeding:Renowned breeder Matthew Pedersen spearheaded the breeding project, introducing this captivating clownfish morph to the aquarium hobby.
