FISH FOOD

Aquarium fish food is a mixture of plant or animal-based ingredients, such as fish meal, spirulina, and shrimp meal, designed to provide pet fish with essential macronutrients, trace elements, and vitamins. It is typically sold in forms like flakes, pellets, or sinking wafers, and is supplemented with color enhancers or specific vitamins to ensure health and vibrant coloration. 

Ingredients and purpose
  • Macronutrients: Fish meal, squid meal, shrimp meal, and earthworms are common sources of protein and lipids to provide energy.
  • Micronutrients: Vitamins and minerals are added to the food to support the fish's immune system and overall health.
  • Specialty ingredients: Other ingredients may include spirulina and algae for herbivores or color-enhancing additives like beta carotene. 

Forms and types
  • Flakes: Lightweight, floating flakes are sprinkled on the surface for fish like tetras and guppies that eat at the top of the water column.
  • Pellets: Compressed pellets are often formulated for specific types of fish and can be sinking or floating, depending on the type.
  • Wafers: Sinking wafers are designed for bottom-dwelling fish like plecos, often containing algae or spirulina.
  • Live and fresh foods: Live foods like brine shrimp or fresh foods like blanched peas and zucchini are also used for enrichment and a varied diet.
