A platinum arowana is a rare and expensive freshwater fish with a striking silvery-white, metallic appearance. It is a color variant of the Asian or South American arowana, known for its large scales, elongated body, and majestic look. These fish are solitary, grow large, and are a centerpiece for experienced aquarists with ample tank space, as their care and housing requirements are demanding.
Appearance and characteristics
  • Color: Has a bright, metallic platinum or silvery-white coloration.
  • Body: Features a long, sleek, and elegant body with large scales, resembling a dragon.
  • Size: Can grow to be 2 to 3 feet long, or even up to 36 inches (90 cm), requiring a very large aquarium.
  • Fins: Often has large pectoral fins and a dorsal fin that runs along most of its back.
Habitat and origin
  • Asian Arowana: Native to Southeast Asia, inhabiting slow-moving rivers and wetlands.
  • South American Arowana: Other platinum variants, such as the Platinum Silver Arowana, originate from South America.

Note: The Asian arowana is considered an endangered species in its native habitat.

Diet

  • Carnivorous: Arowanas are carnivores that eat insects, crustaceans, small fish, and sometimes high-quality pellets or frozen foods.
  • Juveniles vs. Adults: Juveniles primarily eat insects, while adults will eat a wider variety of prey.

Aquarium care

  • Tank Size: Due to their large size, a minimum of 250 gallons is recommended, with 400–800 gallons being ideal to allow them plenty of swimming room.

    ).
  • Tank Mates: They are best kept alone or with other large, compatible species that cannot fit in their mouth, as they can be aggressive.
  • Maintenance: Requires a significant commitment to water quality maintenance.

Rarity and value

  • Rarity: Platinum arowanas are considered extremely rare and highly prized, making them very expensive.
  • Value: The price is determined by factors such as size, age, and genetic quality, and some can cost tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars.
  • Caution: Be aware of "fake" platinum arowanas that have been artificially colored with chemicals.
