The Molly Miller Blenny (Scartella cristata) is a small, mottled brown and white Combtooth Blenny found in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, known for its algae-eating and Aiptasia-consuming behavior, making it a valuable aquarium cleanup crew member. It lacks a swim bladder, resulting in a "hopping" movement, and requires ample rockwork and caves in a minimum 30-gallon established aquarium, with a varied diet of algae, frozen preparations, and meaty foods.
Physical Description
- Coloration:Features a mottled tan, olive-brown, white, and black body and fins.
- Body Shape:Has a typical blenny shape, but with a less vibrant appearance than some other blennies.
- Size:Grows up to 4 to 5 inches (10-12 cm) in length.
- Unique Trait:Lacks a swim bladder, causing it to "hop" along the aquarium bottom and rockwork rather than swim freely.
Habitat and Behavior
- Habitat:In the wild, they are found in tidepools and shallow rocky areas of coral reefs.
- Aquarium Behavior:They are active, gregarious, and entertaining after acclimation, showing playful antics and chasing each other.
- Temperament:Generally peaceful towards other species but may become territorial with other blennies or bottom-dwelling fish.
Diet
- Omnivorous:Primarily feeds on filamentous algae, diatoms, small crustaceans, and detritus.
- Pest Control:Notably eats Aiptasia anemones, cyanobacteria, and microalgae, making it an excellent addition to a reef tank's cleanup crew.
- Feeding:Requires a varied diet, including high-quality frozen foods like brine shrimp and mysis shrimp, along with meaty and algae-based foods offered multiple times daily.
Aquarium Care
- Tank Size:A minimum 30-gallon established aquarium is recommended.
- Aquascaping:Needs plenty of rockwork with crevices for hiding and exploring.
- Tankmates:Safe with most corals and invertebrates but can be territorial with other blennies.
- Lid:A tight-fitting lid is essential to prevent the fish from jumping out of the aquarium.
