The Midnight Clownfish is a captively-bred Amphiprion ocellaris variant that starts life with orange coloration and develops a deep, solid black body as it matures, often losing all stripes and markings. This hardy, peaceful species is popular for its striking, moody appearance, becoming completely jet black but sometimes retaining a bit of orange on its face.
Appearance

  • Juvenile Color:Starts with a brownish-orange color.
  • Adult Color:Develops a deep, solid black body with no stripes.
  • Facial Color:The face may retain some orange markings, though some fish become completely black.
  • Type:A natural mutation of the Ocellaris clownfish, selectively bred in captivity.
Temperament & Behavior

  • Temperament:Generally peaceful and hardy, making them a good choice for beginners.
  • Reef Safe:Yes, they are safe for reef aquariums and can coexist with corals and other non-aggressive invertebrates.
  • Hosting:They may form a symbiotic relationship with anemones but can also thrive without one.
Care & Tank Requirements

  • Tank Size:A 15-gallon tank or larger is recommended for a pair.
  • Diet:Omnivorous; they accept a varied diet including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, high-quality flakes, pellets, and other meaty foods.
  • Social Life:They can be kept singly or as pairs; a large enough tank allows for schooling, but mixing different clownfish species can lead to aggression.
