The Rio Nanay "Blue Face" discus is a specific wild-caught variant of the Green discus (Symphysodon aequifasciatus) native to the Rio Nanay in Peru. It is prized by serious hobbyists for its natural coloration and behavior.
Distinguishing characteristics
- Coloration: Instead of a distinct blue, the "blue face" refers to the intricate, turquoise "scribbles" that appear on the face and fins of a primarily green-bodied wild discus. These patterns are distinct from the blue markings of other wild types, such as the Heckel discus.
- Natural variations: Within the Rio Nanay population, there are color variations among individuals, including some with reddish or yellow spots. Patience is required, as the fish may take weeks or months to develop their full coloration in a new aquarium.
- Behavior: Wild discus, including the Rio Nanay variant, are generally shyer and more prone to spooking than their captive-bred counterparts. They are also slow-feeding grazers.
- Size: The Rio Nanay green discus can grow to an adult size of about 7 inches.
Natural habitat
The Rio Nanay, a blackwater tributary of the Amazon River in Peru, is a low-lying, meandering river that floods the surrounding forest during the rainy season.
-
Water conditions: The Rio Nanay blue face discus lives in warm, soft, and acidic blackwater.
- Temperature: ~82°F (28°C).
- pH: ~6.0.
- Hardness: Very soft.
