Chocolate Shrimp are Neocaridina shrimp characterized by their rich, dark brown to deep red, or even black, coloration, achieved through selective breeding from Red Cherry Shrimp. These hardy, peaceful invertebrates are ideal for planted freshwater aquariums, where they scavenge for algae and biofilm, helping to keep the tank clean. They are relatively easy to care for, grow to about 1.2 inches (3 cm), and are suitable for both beginner and experienced aquarists.
Key Characteristics

  • Appearance: They display a range of colors from deep red and reddish-brown to dark brown and black, with variations in color intensity and patterns.
  • Size: Adults typically grow to about 1.2 inches (3 cm) in length.
  • Origin: They are a selectively bred variety of the Neocaridina shrimp species, which originates from Taiwan.
  • Behavior: They are active scavengers, feeding on algae, decaying plant matter, and biofilm. They are also peaceful and non-aggressive.
Care and Environment

  • Temperament: Peaceful and adaptable, making them excellent tank mates for other peaceful species, such as small fish or snails.
  • Diet: Omnivorous, they thrive on a diet of algae, biofilm, and decaying plant matter found in a well-planted aquarium. High-quality shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables, and algae wafers can supplement their diet.
  • Tank Environment: They prefer a well-established aquarium with plenty of hiding places, such as plants and driftwood.
  • Water Parameters: They are hardy and can tolerate a range of water conditions, but thrive in temperatures between 65–80°F (18–27°C).
Breeding

  • Easy to Breed: Chocolate Shrimp are prolific breeders in suitable conditions.
  • Reproduction: Females carry their eggs under their abdomen, which hatch into miniature versions of the adult shrimp.
Benefits of Keeping Chocolate Shrimp

  • Tank Cleaning: Their scavenging behavior helps control algae and detritus, contributing to a cleaner aquarium.
  • Visual Appeal: Their vibrant, dark colors provide a striking contrast against lighter substrates and aquascaping.
  • Beginner-Friendly: Their hardiness and easy care requirements make them an excellent choice for those new to the hobby.
