The Black Snowflake clownfish is a designer marine fish that is entirely black with irregular, bold white patterns, resembling a snowflake. It's a captive-bred Ocellaris clownfish variety that results from selectively breeding Black Ocellaris and Black Ice Snowflake clownfish, leading to a unique, dark coloration combined with distinctive white markings. Like other Ocellaris clownfish, they are peaceful, hardy, omnivorous, and can form a symbiotic relationship with an anemone.
Key Characteristics
- Color and Pattern:The primary feature is its solid black body with dramatic, irregular white patches or bars that create a "snowflake" effect. Some individuals may have minimal orange, especially on the face.
- Origin:It is not a wild-caught fish but a selectively bred variant of the Ocellaris clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris).
- Size:They grow to about 3 to 3.5 inches (7.6 to 8.9 cm) in length.
- Behavior:They are peaceful, reef-safe, and can be kept singly or in pairs.
- Anemone Symbiosis:They can host with an anemone, though it is not necessary for their survival.
Care Requirements
- Diet:Black Snowflake clownfish are omnivores, readily accepting a wide variety of marine flake foods, pellets, and frozen or live foods such as mysis shrimp and brine shrimp.
- Tank Setup:A tank of 30 gallons or more is recommended for a pair, though experienced hobbyists can manage in smaller tanks.
- Hardiness:They are considered hardy and beginner-friendly due to their robust nature and adaptability to a balanced diet.
