The Bicolor 500 (Aulonocara stuartgranti "Maulana") is a vibrant African Peacock Cichlid from Lake Malawi, known for its striking blue head/front body contrasting with a wide, brilliant yellow stripe running to the tail, often with white-trimmed fins, making it a popular, smaller cichlid (2-4 inches) for aquariums, generally peaceful but needing caves and sandy substrate.

  • Color: Deep blue on the head and upper body, transitioning to a vivid yellow or gold band, often with white highlights on dorsal/anal fins.
  • Size: Smaller than many cichlids, typically reaching 2 to 4 inches (9-10 cm).
  • Juveniles: Usually drab brown with vertical stripes.
  • Females: More subdued, often with a single dark vertical bar.

Habitat & Behavior
  • Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa, found in shallower, rocky areas and sandy zones.
  • Temperament: Considered one of the more peaceful Peacock Cichlids, suitable for community tanks with similar species.
  • Activity: May be shy, using caves for shelter, but also enjoys open swimming space.

Aquarium Care
  • Tank Size: A minimum of 75 gallons is recommended, with ample rockwork for caves and an open sandy bottom.
  • Substrate: Sand is crucial as they sift it for food, preventing gill damage and blockages.
  • Water: Prefers hard, alkaline water (pH 7.8-8.6) with excellent oxygenation and stability.
  • Diet: Omnivorous; varied diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, and frozen foods (brine shrimp, spirulina).

Key Characteristics
  • Name Origin: Named after Alfred Maulana, a diver for Stuart Grant, a renowned fish exporter.
  • Popularity: Highly sought after for its distinct coloration and manageable size, making it great for beginners.
