An Albino Sulfur Head Peacock Cichlid is a stunning, selectively bred variant of Aulonocara maylandi, known for its vibrant, contrasting coloration: often a dark body (black/blue) with an intense yellow or orange blaze from its nose along the dorsal fin, but in albino forms, the body is pale/white and the yellow/orange blaze is brilliant, sometimes with orange blotches (OB), making them highly sought after in the aquarium hobby for their unique beauty.
Key Characteristics:
  • Coloration: Pale or white body with a strikingly bright yellow/orange "sulfur" blaze on the head and dorsal fin; OB (Orange Blotch) versions have added orange patches.
  • Origin: A hybrid/variant of Lake Malawi peacocks, Aulonocara maylandi, adapted for aquariums.
  • Size: Males typically reach 4-6 inches (10-15 cm).
  • Temperament: Males are territorial and semi-aggressive, best kept with other peaceful, similarly sized Malawi cichlids in larger tanks with plenty of rocks and caves.
  • Diet: Omnivorous, accepting high-quality pellets, flakes, and frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia.
In the Aquarium:
  • Tank Setup: Needs a minimum 55-75 gallon tank with sandy substrate, plenty of rocks for caves (territorial breaks), and stable Malawi-like water (pH 7.5-8.5, temp 75-80°F).
  • Social: Keep with other peacocks/haps; avoid overly aggressive Mbunas; a higher female-to-male ratio helps reduce male aggression.
  • Breeding: Mouthbrooders, where the female incubates eggs in her mouth, losing weight as she doesn't eat much.
These fish are prized for adding dynamic color and are a rewarding challenge for experienced hobbyists.
