Freshwater sharks, despite their name, are not true sharks. They are fish from the carp and minnow family (Cyprinidae) that resemble sharks due to their elongated bodies and fins. Many freshwater fish are commonly called "sharks" in the aquarium trade, including Bala sharks, Red-tailed black sharks, and Rainbow sharks. True freshwater sharks, like the Speartooth shark, exist but are not commonly found in aquariums.
