The Gold Severum is a vibrant, golden-yellow South American cichlid known for its large, rounded body, red spots (which can fade with age), and relatively peaceful yet semi-aggressive temperament, growing up to 8 inches and requiring a spacious, planted tank with similar-sized tankmates, feeding on an omnivorous diet, and serving as a striking centerpiece fish in a freshwater aquarium.

  • Color: Primarily a bright, creamy golden-yellow, often with red or orange dots and dashes that can become more prominent as they mature or during spawning.
  • Body Shape: A deep, laterally compressed, disk-like body typical of cichlids.
  • Size: Reaches a significant adult size of 6 to 8 inches (15-20 cm).
  • Fins: Males may develop more pointed dorsal and anal fins and markings on their gill plates.
  • Temperament & Behavior
    • Semi-Peaceful: Generally calm but can become territorial and aggressive, especially when breeding or kept with smaller fish, notes Aquatics Unlimited.
    • Social: Prefers groups of 4 or more to maintain social structure and can become more comfortable with their owners, notes Tropical Tank.
    Aquarium Needs
    • Tank Size: Requires a large tank (55 gallons minimum for one, more for groups) with plenty of swimming space, large rocks, driftwood, and hiding spots
    • Water: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0-7.5) and stable temperatures (75-82°F).
    • Plants: Can be kept in planted tanks, but they may nibble on vegetation, notes Live Fish Direct.
    Diet
    • Omnivorous: Eats high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen foods (like bloodworms), and fresh vegetables (like spinach or lettuce).
    • Color Enhancement: Carotenoid-rich foods can help maintain vibrant color.
